Bases and storage beds: the half of sleep you don't see
A good mattress on an old, tired base only performs half as well. The base supports the mattress, ventilates it from below and stops it deforming before its time, so choosing it well is part of the same job. In the shop you have two routes: the upholstered bases and the lift-up storage beds.
The upholstered base is the simple, firm option: a flat, breathable surface that gives the mattress even support. It's perfect if you don't need to store things underneath and want something stable and fuss-free, like the Sonpura Store base.
The lift-up storage bed solves another problem: space. You lift the mattress and underneath there's a huge chest for blankets, out-of-season clothes or suitcases. In flats where every metre counts, it's one of those purchases you're grateful for every week. Look at the opening (side or front) depending on how your bed is positioned, and at the type of top.
Compared with the traditional slatted base, both the upholstered base and the storage bed offer more continuous, stable support, without hard points digging into the mattress. That helps the mattress work as it should and last longer. If your bedroom tends to be damp, prioritise ventilation: storage beds with a breathable top and bases with good airflow stop condensation building up under the mattress.
A couple of practical things when choosing: always check that the base size matches the mattress, and bear in mind the total height, because a tall base plus a thick mattress can leave your bed higher than is comfortable. Buy a mattress and base of the same size together and the warranty goes up to five years.
If you're torn between an upholstered base, storage bed or slatted base, we explain it all calmly in the sleep guide. And as always, delivery included to mainland Spain and the Lorca shop to see it in person.
