How to choose your mattress

The mattress is the piece you notice most each morning, so it's worth pausing to think it over. First is the core. In the shop we work with two families: the pocket springs, which ventilate very well and hold up without sagging, ideal if you sleep hot or you're two people of different weights; and the memory foam and HR foam, which hug the body and spread the pressure points, very pleasant if you sleep on your side or get up with aches.

Then there's firmness. There's no such thing as a 'good' firmness: it depends on your weight and how you sleep. A slight person who sleeps on their side usually does better with a medium mattress, while someone bigger or who sleeps on their back appreciates a firmer feel. If you sleep as a couple and there are several kilos between you, an independent pocket spring is worth having so one doesn't feel the other move.

And the size. Going from a 135 to a 150 makes more difference than you'd think, especially as a couple. If your bed base allows it, it's almost always worth gaining those centimetres. Look too at the comfort layers and the fabric. Materials like latex, wool or gel memory foam make the difference between a mattress that traps heat and one that helps regulate temperature, something you'll be grateful for in Lorca's summers. A good outer fabric, breathable and soft, is the first thing that touches your skin each night. You don't need to know the spec sheet by heart: in the shop we'll tell you in a minute which mattress fits how you sleep.
