Headboards: the detail that finishes the bedroom

A headboard doesn't change how you sleep, but it changes how the room feels. It's the piece that gives the bed character and tidies up the wall, and for little money it leaves the bedroom looking much more put together. In the shop you'll find different designs to match what you already have.

By style, there are three big families. The plain or panelled ones, understated and easy to match, like the panelled model. The studded ones, with that metal trim on the edge that adds a classic touch. And the tufted or buttoned ones, softer and cosier in feel, like the Auriga Lusso or the buttoned headboard.

When choosing, think about three things. Size: the headboard usually matches the width of the bed, though many look good a touch wider. Fabric: neutral tones cope best with changes in decor, and fabrics like corduroy or linen add texture without drawing too much attention. And fixing: most attach to the wall or the base, so it's worth knowing in advance where it will go.

As for upkeep, not much: an upholstered headboard stays well with a gentle vacuum now and then and, for stains, a barely damp cloth without rubbing. If the bed is against the wall, a headboard also protects the paint from the rub of the pillows and the odd bump on reading nights. It's a small detail that extends the life of the wall and of the set itself.
